Making Wednesday 2:45 pm
Filmmaker H. G. Solomon of Remote Control Monkey was in residency at the Gunnery Studios in Sydney, Australia; Wednesday 2:45 was one of the projects borne of that experience.
The film is entirely due to the long hours and labor of talented artists and the generosity of artificial limb suppliers, business offices, and yummy cafes. Filmed in Sydney with an all-Australian cast and majority-Australian crew, the making of Wednesday 2:45 pm revealed the Aussie enthusiasm – and support – for filmmaking. The film’s small crew of ten was like an army of one hundred.
Director H.G. Solomon on the back story of Wednesday 2:45 pm:
“I should start with the Leg Story. We needed a prosthetic limb, and it didn’t look like that was going to happen. I didn’t think we could do the film without the leg. I nearly gave up – we had called every prosthesis place in Australia. At the last second we had oodles of legs – everyone wanted to give us a free leg.
When we went to get the leg – we picked the first place that told us they wanted their leg in the movie – it was like we walked onto the set of the film. The receptionist pushed a button, spoke into an oversized microphone and announced in a nasal voice, 'Dr. Gonzalez, they’re here about the leg.' And then on the trip back to the studio we didn’t have a bag to carry the leg, so we got lots of strange looks on the train. People were calling the cell phone, offering legs, and I would say, 'No, thanks – we already have a leg. We just picked it up.'
When I returned the leg I carried it in a backpack. On the way I passed this homeless guy with only one leg – someone I saw all the time. I dropped a few coins in his bucket and kept walking. And then about a block away it hit me – he had only one leg, and I had three. If this film makes any money, I want to buy that guy a leg."
